Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about overdrafts and borrowing with Alliance Credit Union.

What is the difference between an arranged and unarranged overdraft?
An arranged overdraft is agreed with us in advance — you know your limit and the costs. An unarranged overdraft happens when you go over your agreed limit or don't have one at all. Unarranged overdrafts cost more and can affect your credit score.
How much does an arranged overdraft cost?
You'll pay interest only on the amount you use, at a representative APR of 39.9%. There's no monthly fee for staying within your limit. For example, using £500 for 14 days would cost approximately £7.65 in interest.
Will an overdraft affect my credit score?
Responsible use of an arranged overdraft generally won't harm your credit score — and can actually help build it. Unarranged overdrafts, missed repayments, or staying overdrawn long-term can negatively affect your score.
Can I increase or reduce my overdraft limit?
Yes. You can request an increase or reduce your limit at any time in the app. Reductions take effect immediately. Increases are subject to affordability checks and are usually instant.
What happens if I don't repay my overdraft?
If you don't repay, interest continues to be charged and your balance remains outstanding. Prolonged non-repayment can affect your credit score and lead to your account being restricted. If you're struggling, contact us immediately — we'll work with you on a plan.
Should I use an overdraft or a personal loan?
Overdrafts are best for short-term flexibility — covering an unexpected bill or a temporary cash-flow gap. Personal loans are better for larger amounts and longer terms, with fixed monthly repayments and much lower interest rates.
Can I get an overdraft if I'm a new member?
Yes — if you're eligible, you can apply for an arranged overdraft as soon as you open your account. Eligibility is based on a soft credit check and affordability assessment, so it won't affect your credit score to apply.
